Coherently communicating your scientific findings has never been more important, especially given the proliferating multimedia and face-to-face channels of communication in the current era. This course has thus been developed by the Language Centre to support you in developing the skills you need to clearly and confidently speak about your scientific research to colleagues and lay audiences.

Course Aims

The primary aim of this academic presentation skills course is to build your confidence and effectiveness as an academic presenter. Through guided practice and expert feedback, you will develop the core skills needed to deliver clear, engaging, and professional presentations in academic and research settings.

• The course focuses on the key elements of successful academic presentations, including:
• Understanding and analysing your audience
• Creating a strong and impactful opening
• Using storytelling techniques to communicate research clearly
• Applying effective signposting language for structure and clarity
• Designing clear, engaging, and professional presentation slides
• Using your voice effectively through breath control, intonation, pausing, and emphasis
• Developing confident body language and stage presence
• Managing and responding confidently to Q&A sessions

By the end of the course, you will be better equipped to deliver compelling academic presentations that engage your audience and communicate your message with impact.
