This course focuses on the do’s and don’ts of government funding. In addition to an overview of the latest developments, there is ample opportunity to discuss practical cases. What challenges do you face in subsidy practice, and which solutions can be offered? We examine the interface between subsidies and service contracts, subsidy termination, and possible alternatives to traditional subsidy instruments. We also discuss the influence of competition rules on subsidy allocation procedures and the granting of budgetary subsidies. Attention is also paid to the application of the principle of proportionality in subsidy practice.

Our lecturer, Mr Dr Ellen Hardy, is an expert in subsidy law and will provide you with practical knowledge and tips that you can apply directly in your daily work.

In 2025, PhD candidate Mr Veerle van Waarde from the Department of Public Law (Constitutional and Administrative Law) at the University of Amsterdam will also join the programme. She will address alternative forms of financing, such as revolving funds, loans, and vouchers. In addition, she will discuss the implications for legal protection when using these alternative financing methods.

After completing the course, you will be up to date with current issues and new developments in subsidy law and will have practical guidance for addressing challenges in this field.

The interactive nature of the course allows plenty of room for discussing real-life situations you may encounter. Please email your specific cases, challenges, or topics to law.next@maastrichtuniversity.nl, and we will address them during the course.
